Not Merely a Polite Gesture. Oskar Kokoschka to Adolf Loos

10. 9. 2024 – 2. 2. 2025
See Oskar Kokoschka's recently discovered letter appealing for the protection of the Villa Müller.

The exhibition "Not Just a Polite Gesture. Oskar Kokoschka to Adolf Loos" presents a newly discovered letter that Oskar Kokoschka wrote to the Austrian Minister of Education Heinrich Drimmel in 1961. In the letter he asks for the preservation of the Villa Müller in Prague, the work of Adolf Loos, and its inclusion on the UNESCO list. This important document has been purchased for the collections of the Museum of Prague.

The letter provides insight into post-war efforts to preserve cultural monuments in communist states and shows Kokoschka's personal connection and support for the work of his friend Loos. The exhibition is complemented by newly discovered photographs of the Villa Kapsa that document Loos' interiors and Kokoschka's influence on the Prague cultural scene.
